Styrax obassia, known as the fragrant snowbell, is a larger lesser-known relative of the Japanese snowbell. It has much larger, rounded, almost tropical-looking, fuzzy leaves and superb, pendulous, fragrant white flowers. Attractive green fruits persist into winter. Older trees develop smooth grey bark that exfoliates to reveal a pretty orange inner layer especially valued for winter interest.
